Mordheim Beasts of Chaos warband

With the renewed buzz around Mordheim and the new Beasts of Chaos release I've taken the opportunity to have a break from painting my Relic Lizardmen and delve back into Mordheim to make something very Chaotic indeed.

In the countryside around Mordheim there stood a farm, far from any other dwellings. But it was close to the forest and close enough to the Damned City that the yellow dust from the Catastrophe drifted into its fields. Soon the animals of the farm began to sicken and die. It wasn’t long before the Farmer (whose name is forgotten) was left with only a single billy goat, which had always been hardy and sturdy and did not tend to sicken when the other animals had, and which had always weathered the winters in good health.
The Farmer persisted on his land with what crops had survived the blight, meaning to tend his only surviving animal until his next opportunity to rent it for breeding and eventually to sell its meat. One day, a stranger came by the farm and, taking great interest in the goat, offered to buy it for a single gold coin. The Farmer took offense at this low offer for what was – after all – his main livelihood, and sent the stranger on his way.
Over the next month, the goat’s horns began to twist more than they had before, hinting at unpleasant and unusual shapes. The Farmer worried that the goat might finally succumb to the illness that had taken the land. Then a month to the day since the stranger had come to the farm, the same stranger came once again. This time he offered the Farmer a single silver coin. Of course the Farmer was offended at this even lower offer and took great suspicion of the stranger and sent him on his way again with stronger emnity than before.
From that day, the goat began to bleat at all hours, and its bleats were increasingly strange. Sometimes its cries could be heard bellowing out across the countryside and echoing within the dark forests nearby. Its twisted horns began to resemble the boughs of trees, and the Farmer began to fear the creature. One dark night the goat’s bleats came almost to resemble speech and the Farmer resolved to slaughter it and sell it for meat, though it might be the only value left in his farm.
As the sun rose the next morning, the stranger arrived at last for a third time, greeting the Farmer warmly. It had been a full month since his last visit, realised the Farmer, who by now suspected some evil involvement on the part of this stranger. The stranger’s final offer was the goat for a single copper coin. As the Farmer considered this, the goat continued to bleat and cackle and now it seemed as though other voices answered it from the distant forest, as though responding to kindred.
Hearing this, the Farmer sold the goat to the stranger for a single copper coin, and watched as the stranger took its front paw as though holding the hand of a friend, and walked away with the goat following upright on its hind legs.

This is a small one-off using the Cult of the Possessed list. There was in fact a Beastmen list published in Town Cryer but I always find myself drawn to the core set of warbands in the original Mordheim Rule Book, which I think are broad enough to represent most Mordheim factions you could think of. The Beasts warband is a work in progress and I'll post again soon with the finished models. Got to restrain myself to not spending too much time on these side projects or else I'll never finish the Relic Lizardmen!

  1. Fantastic! I very much like the properly chaotic approach. Most stock chaos models these days are frustratingly bland. A Possessed warband is on my to do list for the foreseeable future, so I'll be following this project with keen interest.

    1. Thanks so much! My other Mordheim warbands were deliberately restrained in style so I'm going all out with making this one horrible. Very much looking forward to seeing your take on the Possessed.

  2. Very nice work, very cinematic.
I got here through google and specifically from the illustration at the top. Where is it from?

    1. Thanks for visiting! It's a detail from the engraving Lo Stregozzo by Marcantonio Raimondi and Agostino Veneziano.
