Mordheim Bretonnians

Who goes into Mordheim wearing blue and yellow stripes? Only a very particular class of badass. Bretonnian warband pics below the jump.

“My lord, we are now approaching the boundary of the weaving and dyeing district.”

The monumental knight broke his stride and stopped without a word. Standing still, armoured head to foot, he looked like a gleaming steel statue. Behind him, an archer and a man-at-arms held their positions. His man took his cue with a practised naturalism, turning to face the square ahead of them, planting the banner he carried in the dusty ground, and bellowing:

“Hear ye!
So approaches the anointed knight Sr Laurenc Villeuro of the Duchy of la Castillo Montefort!
As he looketh upon this area does it becomes his jurisdiction by holy right!
All present in this area are commanded to reveal themselves! All heathenfolk in this area are commanded to reveal themselves and submit! All of unholy provenance in this area are commanded to reveal themselves and renounce their unholy provenance and submit to be put to death!
So hear ye!”

This missive being said, the square again returned to silence. The small group waited still. Silence still, but for the creaking of the archer's drawn bowstring.

“Since there is no answer then, hear ye that any who are discovered who have not revealed themselves will submit to be put to death! So hear ye!”

The knight, still silent, once again resumed his tremendous stride, and his men followed after.

Though Town Cryer put out some rules for Bretonnians (with the disclaimer that no Bretonnians ever set foot in Mordheim), I decided to ignore both rules and disclaimer and just use Reiklander rules for a small Bretonnian warband. Reikland is a good fit, with special rules for better discipline and better marksmanship (both a good match for Bretonnians).

This was another bits-box delve, initially starting with only the knight and his bannerman. Both use actual Bretonnian parts. The knight is one of the original plastic mounted knights with a lot of work to put him on foot (mostly beefing out those very bandy legs and soft shoulders). He also got a couple heraldic bits from the Mordheim set (the dragon head and devil face). The bannerman is a plastic Bretonnian man-at-arms with a spare head from the Archers I'm using for Ostlanders (instead of replacing the kind-of incongruous hat, I'm thinking of it as "in the Tilean style"). His banner is trimmed down from a Chaos Knight. After making those two, I decided I hadn't given myself enough work and stuck together some more odds and ends (there's even some Cadian bits in there) with a lot of greenstuff to make a man-at-arms and an archer.

The archer is all Empire bits with a lot of greenstuff
The man-at-arms is based on an Imperial Guardsman
The painting process was a real hassle! I'm improving at freehand but I can't yet keep patterns consistent. I ended up redoing the banner from scratch after making a real mess of it the first time. Never the less it was fun to try out an old-school early-medieval Angus McBride style with bright colours and bold patterns.

This is the last Mordheim side-project I have lined up. Once my main project the Ostlanders is complete, I have a very cool Age of Sigmar project to unveil. Follow me on Instagram for more.

  1. These are fantastic! Where did you find the knight’s shield? I desperately need one of those!

    1. Thanks very much!! The shield icon is a gargoyle piece from the old Mordheim buildings sprue. Might be difficult to come by these days!
